Shantang Customs

Shantang Water Township Wedding

The wedding in Shantang Water Village restores the customs of marriage in Suzhou in ancient times. The content of the wedding includes marriage, worship, and the bridal chamber.

Blessing and putting river lanterns

Putting river lanterns (also often written as putting "lotus lanterns") is a traditional Chinese custom for prayers and blessings. It is popular in Han, Mongolia, Daur, Yi, Bai, Naxi, Miao, Dong, Buyi, Zhuang, and Tujia areas. River lights are often set off by the water at night of March 3, Qiqiao, and Mid-Autumn Festival.

Tanabata Culture Festival

In our country, on the night of the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, the weather is warm and the vegetation is fragrant. This is commonly known as the Qixi Festival, and it is also called the "Qiao Qiao Festival" or "Girl's Day". This is the most romantic Chinese traditional festival. A festival was also a day that girls valued most in the past. On a clear summer and autumn night, the sky is shining with stars, and a white Milky Way traverses north and south. On the east and west sides of the river, there is a shining star on each side of the river, facing each other across the river, and that is the Altair and Vega.

It is a folk custom to sit and watch the Altair Vega on Chinese Valentine's Day. According to legend, this evening of every year is the time when the Heavenly Weaver and Cowherd meet at Magpie Bridge. The Weaver Girl is a beautiful, clever, and ingenious fairy. On this evening, mortal women begged her for wisdom and ingenuity, and inevitably asked her for a happy marriage, so the seventh day of July is also called the Qiao Qiao Festival.

Mountain Pond Festival

Our people have the custom of "Autumn Evening and Evening Moon" in ancient times. Xiyue means worshiping the moon god. In the Zhou Dynasty, every Mid-Autumn Festival was held to welcome the cold and celebrate the moon. The fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month is the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival of the Han people. In Shantang, the Mid-Autumn Festival Moon Ceremony was restored, expressing people's wish for the moon god to bless the world.

Lantern Festival

The first month is the first month of the lunar calendar. The ancients called the night "Xiao", so the fifteenth of the first month was called the Lantern Festival. The fifteenth of the first lunar month is the night of the first full moon of the year. It is also the night of the renewal of the unity and the rejuvenation of the earth. People celebrate this and also celebrate the continuation of the new year. The Lantern Festival is also called "Shangyuan Festival".
